Climate Action Campaign Urges Congress to Pass Climate Investments After Far-Right Supreme Court Majority Undermines Clean Air Act in West Virginia v. EPA Decision

Court’s decision significantly hinders the EPA’s authority under the Clean Air Act to limit carbon pollution from power plants and undermines U.S. efforts to fight climate change

Washington, D.C. – Today, Margie Alt, Director of the Climate Action Campaign, released the following statement after a far-right majority on the U.S. Supreme Court announced their decision in West Virginia v. EPA. The decision is a terrible overreach and will limit EPA’s ability to set the strong standards we need to cut carbon pollution and tackle the climate crisis.

“Today’s overreaching decision by the far-right majority on the Supreme Court is outrageous. It is a giveaway to the fossil fuel industry and does a dramatic disservice to the majority of Americans who know climate can’t wait and the cost of inaction is growing at the expense of our health, environment, and future generations,” said Alt. “This decision not only undermines decades of established EPA authority and precedent under the Clean Air Act to limit pollution and protect public health, it severely limits EPA’s ability to tackle the climate crisis. The truth is that the stakes couldn’t be higher. Communities are being devastated across the country by extreme weather–like stronger hurricanes, raging wildfires, worsening flooding, and suffering from extreme heat and droughts all of which are made more frequent and severe by climate change. The increased intensity and frequency of these extreme weather events is connected by scientists to climate change. Now, we are turning our outrage into action by demanding that Congress finally pass climate, justice, jobs, and clean energy investments that have been stalled in the Senate. For every second we delay, the costs of inaction for all Americans only grows.”
