Climate Action Campaign Statement On Senator Manchin’s Refusal to Support Climate, Justice, and Clean Energy Investments
CAC Director Margie Alt: “Our coalition will continue to do everything in our power to win a cleaner, more just, and more equitable future for all Americans.”
Washington, D.C. – Today, Margie Alt, Director of the Climate Action Campaign, released the following statement after reports that Senator Manchin will not support a reconciliation deal that includes action on climate, justice, and clean energy.
“It is beyond outrageous that Senator Manchin–along with big polluters and their allies in Congress–has derailed critical investments in climate, justice, clean energy, and health that a large majority of the American people want and need,” said Alt. “This failure to act exponentially increases the already catastrophic costs of the climate crisis that will be felt by all Americans, and particularly for historically overburdened communities that are the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and the least able to recover from its extreme impacts such as flooding, wildfires, and deadly heat waves. Senator Manchin, and every Republican Senator, failed the American people. They failed to deliver cheaper, more reliable clean energy to the American people, instead perpetuating our vulnerability to volatile oil and gas prices. They bear full responsibility for the catastrophic impacts on our families, our health, and our environment that come with that failure.”
“Our coalition will continue to do everything in our power to win a cleaner, more just, and more equitable future for all Americans. While we will not let Congress off the hook for the long term, in the immediate future we are demanding that President Biden and his administration use every tool at their disposal to make good on his promise to cut climate pollution in half by 2030 and to deliver meaningful benefits to traditionally overburdened communities. The American people deserve nothing less.”
