Washington, DC – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today proposed standards to limit pollution from light-duty and heavy-duty vehicles. In response, Climate Action Campaign Director Margie Alt released the following statement:

“Tackling the climate crisis demands that we clean up the largest single source of climate pollution in the U.S. — transportation. That’s why we welcome the EPA’s proposals to slash climate pollution from cars, trucks, buses, and other heavy-duty vehicles. These safeguards will measurably and significantly drive down pollution from the transportation sector while providing protections for people who have traditionally borne the greatest burden from this dangerous pollution–those living closest to highways and in heavily congested areas.

“We applaud this proposal as a critical first step toward pollution-free transportation. As these standards move through the process, our coalition will call for them to be strengthened before they are finalized, especially as EPA focuses on the outsized problem of truck pollution. The EPA needs to finish the job this year and put the nation on track for 100% electric transportation. Solutions for pollution that the EPA can implement this year also include strong climate pollution standards for power plants. Our climate, health, and communities can’t wait!”
